Waterfowl breeding conditions within the survey area depend largely on the timing of spring
phenology. A very mild spring breakup occurred in Interior Alaska, due to very low winter snow
fall resulting in lower than normal water levels across the Interior. Spring breakup, while
initially delayed, occurred normally throughout the majority of Coastal Alaska.
The purpose of the study was to gain a greater understanding of locations and behaviors of wintering sea ducks when they return each evening. The goal of the study was to identify the nighttime roosting location and behavior of the Long Tailed Duck.
Background
We were asked to evaluate the suitability of a turbine powered airplane for waterfowl surveys in interior British Columbia. Previous surveys had been completed by helicopter (Andre Breault, personal communication).
The graph for goldeneyes on strata 8-11 (Alaskan tundra) does display an apparant decline from about 1967 to about 1990. There needs to be caution in interpretation of these data. Goldeneyes are very difficult to detect and identify on the breeding pair survey.

During the period 26 May to 6 Aug, 2014, nest boxes placed on seven different lakes along the Kodiak road system and Karluk Lake on the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge were checked by the author(s). Two new road system nest boxes were added in 2014.
During the period 12 May to 20 Sept, 2015, nest boxes located at eight different lakes on the Kodiak road system and Karluk Lake on the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge were checked by the author(s). Three of the original 8 Buskin Lake boxes were moved to new locations on Buskin Lake in 2015.
